Do you offer virtual counselling sessions?

Yes, we offer virtual counselling sessions. Online therapy, also known as e-therapy, teletherapy, and remote therapy, is just like regular in-person therapy. The only difference is, as the name suggests, you and your therapist work together online or over the phone.

What's the difference between therapy and psychiatry?

Therapy, provided by our counsellors and therapists, addresses emotional and behavioural challenges using therapeutic techniques for mental well-being. Psychiatry, led by medically trained psychiatric providers, involves diagnosing and treating mental health conditions with medication.

How often should I attend therapy?

The frequency of therapy sessions varies based on individual needs. Many clients start with weekly sessions and adjust as needed.

What are your hours of operation?

ELM therapy offers flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Do you offer couples and family counselling?

Unfortunately, we do not offer couples and family counselling. However, we are happy to provide resources in the community.

What are sessions like?

Because each person has unique issues and goals, sessions will vary depending on the individual. In general, you can expect to discuss the current events happening in your life, your personal history relevant to your issue, and report progress (or any new insights gained) from the previous session. Depending on your specific needs, our work together can be short-term, for a specific issue, or longer-term, to deal with more difficult patterns or your desire for more personal development.

Does what we talk about in session remain confidential?

Confidentiality is one of the most important components between a client and a therapist. Successful therapy requires a high degree of trust with highly sensitive subject matter that is usually not discussed anywhere but in session. What you discuss in session will not be shared with anyone, as outlined in the Informed Consent form that all clients sign before working with ELM Therapy. Sometimes, however, you may want your therapist to share information or give an update to someone on your healthcare team (your Physician, Naturopath, Attorney), but by law, we cannot release this information without obtaining your written permission.

However, provincial law and professional ethics require us to maintain confidentiality except for the following situations:

  • there is an imminent danger to an identifiable third party or
    to self;
    • when a counsellor/therapist has reasonable cause to suspect
    abuse or neglect of a child;
    • when a disclosure is ordered by a court;
    • when a client requests disclosure; or,
    • when a client files a complaint or claims professional
    liability by the counsellor/therapist in a lawsuit.

Are online sessions just as good as being in person?

Yes! Online therapy is just as effective as meeting in person. All the nuances of facial expressions and body language can be seen through video just as they can in person. Many of our clients have commented that they prefer online sessions because they do not have to allocate additional time to travel to and from an office, deal with traffic, parking, etc. and they feel more comfortable in their home or office.

What is Registered Counselling Therapist - Candidate?

Registered Counselling Therapist – Candidate (RCT-C) is overseen by an experienced counselling therapist with specialized training in supervision. The required candidacy period extends over 2 to 5 years and involves a minimum of 2,000 hours of supervised practice with at least 800 hours of direct counselling experience.

Confidential information is NOT shared with the supervisor.

Can you give me a formal diagnosis?

I'm unable to provide any mental health diagnosis, but I can recommend consulting with a specialist who may be able to provide a more definitive diagnosis.
